About Douglas Pendleton Bennion

Douglas Bennion spent most of his life roaming the deserts and mountains of the southwest. Drawn by the colors, weather, and lifestyle of the Pacific northwest, he and his wife moved to Bellingham, Washington in 1995.

After receiving a Bachelor degree in fine art and education, Douglas taught high school and community college courses for several years before resigning his teaching positions to devote full attention to his art in the late nineteen-seventies.

As one publication observed, "Despite his refusal to become commercially categorized, Douglas captures a distinctively appreciative audience and collector market with each series of studies that he produces. He blends his preference for watercolors with a delicate, stylized rice paper to create the subtle forms and expressions that belong exclusively to him."

Noted for his range and versatility, Douglas is a conceptual artist producing figurative, floral, and wildlife paintings. He has had a number of one-person exhibitions, and he has been included in many juried and invitational shows throughout the western United States. The artwork has received numerous awards and is held in private, corporate, and public collections.

My paintings are primarily watercolors on rice paper, but I also produce the occasional oil or a pen and ink drawing. My work is representative of a moment in time that captures a story about life as it takes place around me. I enjoy weaving lines, shapes, and colors into an illusion pulled from my surroundings to find that spark of excitement and create its own relationship with the viewer. I tend toward simplification using strong shapes and fluid, continuous lines that are symbolic of the character of the subject. I often exaggerate or distort lines and shapes to enhance the overall composition and style of the painting.

Care and Handling

Like all fine artwork, Giclée prints are fragile and should remain in the protective bag until framed.  They can be damaged by fingerprints, scuffing or scratching the surface, humidity, water droplets, and creasing of the paper by improper handling.  Even after washing your hands, moisture and natural oils can damage the print.

We strongly suggest working with a professional frame shop, allowing only a professional framer to directly handle your print.  You should insist that all materials that come in contact with your print or original artwork are acid-free.  Your museum quality print was created using only the highest quality inks rated to last for generations.  Although cost is a factor, we recommend using a UV rated glass or acrylic to further protect your investment.

Rolled prints should never be forced into a flat position but should be allowed to relax naturally on a flat, clean surface which is best done by a professional frame shop.  Do not counter-roll or squeeze the print as it may cause a permanent crease in the paper.

Artwork should never be displayed in direct sunlight.  If sunlight enters a room through a window or skylight, illuminating a wall where a painting is hung, even for a short period of time, the artwork runs the risk of significant fading.  Even UV rated glass or acrylic will not provide adequate protection for exposing any artwork to direct sunlight.

Always store or hang your artwork in a warm, dry atmosphere.  Fine artwork should never be stored or displayed in humid environments such as an unheated garage, bathroom, or laundry room.

When cleaning the glass on your framed artwork, spray the glass cleaner into a soft rag and never directly onto the glass as it can run down and seep between the frame and glass, migrating up onto the matting or print, causing permanent discoloration.

What is a Giclée?

The word Giclée (gee-clay) comes from a French word meaning "to squirt or spray".  The term is a loose fitting word that nearly describes the printing process in which ink is applied to paper.  These highly sophisticated printers use a continuous stream of up to one million microscopic droplets of pigmented ink onto fine quality paper or canvas.  Each droplet is only one quarter of the diameter of a human hair. On paper, the inks are actually absorbed slightly and blend to create the full brilliance and subtlest tones of color, which produces an image that is often indistinguishable from the original artwork.

The image is digitized and color corrected to attain the closest possible match to the original artwork.  This digital information is fine tuned to the type of paper or surface on which the image is to be printed, further ensuring the fidelity of the original.  They are produced using the finest quality and longest lasting materials currently available which will have no noticeable fading or discoloration for many decades, and with proper care and handling, a century or more.

Giclée prints are now found in the finest galleries and reputable museums around the world, including the Louvre, New York's Metropolitan Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.  Many collectors are learning to appreciate the superior quality of a Giclée that is priced much less than the original painting.

I have worked closely with the printer to produce these fine museum quality Giclée prints using the highest rated Epson color archival pigment inks and Epson acid-free fine art paper to capture the full beauty of the original paintings.

What is a Lithograph?

The lithography process begins with a transparency of the original artwork which is separated into the four basic color elements; red, yellow, blue, and black.  One printing plate is produced for each of these four colors with a mechanically spaced dot to except the ink, which will blend optically to reproduce the original color and tonal range found in the original artwork.  The four plates are mounted and aligned on a four-color printing press and the paper is run through the press accepting ink from each plate and transferring it to the paper.

The full edition is printed at one time, using the finest quality and longest lasting materials available which will have no noticeable fading or discoloration for many decades.  I approve each step in the process and work closely with the printer to produce the closest possible match to the original artwork.

What is a Limited Edition Print?

A limited edition print is a high quality reproduction of an original work of art that are individually numbered followed by the number of total reproductions, such as 5/90, which is the fifth print of ninety total prints.  Once the last print is printed, for example 90/90, no additional prints of this edition can be produced.  All of my limited edition prints come with a Certificate of Authenticity which fully describes the print and all edition image sizes that have been produced from the original painting.

What is a Certificate of Authenticity?

Enclosed with every print you purchase, the Certificate of Authenticity fully certifies and describes the print edition produced from the original painting.  Each certificate is hand-numbered and signed by the artist.  Your Certificate of Authenticity is a valuable part of your purchase and should be filed with your other important papers.

The Certificate of Authenticity gives the artist the opportunity to distinguish a limited edition print from what would be presented as an "open" print, reproduction, or poster.  It also details the various printing factors: if multiple edition image sizes were produced and in what number, the total number of all reproductions produced including the artist proofs, and certifies that each print has been personally inspected, signed, and numbered by the artist.
